NFL decision: Week 17 Buffalo-Cincinnati game will not be resumed and what does it mean?

In a late-breaking news fashion last night, the NFL announced that the Week 17 game between the Buffalo Bills visiting the Cincinnati game will not be resumed. Therefore yes, both teams will technically only have played 16 games in 2022 as opposed to the 17 games they were scheduled for.

The NFL DID NOT agree to tie the game and add a “free win” to the Bengals or Bills record this season.

Among the key factors in arriving at this decision:

  • Not playing the Buffalo-Cincinnati game to its conclusion will have no effect on which clubs qualify for the postseason. No club would qualify for the postseason and no club will be eliminated based on the outcome of this game.
  • It would require postponing the start of the playoffs for one week, thereby affecting all 14 clubs that qualify for postseason play.
  • Making the decision prior to Week 18 is consistent with our competitive principles and enables all clubs to know the playoff possibilities prior to playing the final weekend of regular season games.
NFL Press Release

What does that mean?

1 – The AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site if the participating teams played an unequal number of games and both could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. Those circumstances involve Buffalo or Cincinnati qualifying for the game as a road team and are listed below:

Scenario 1

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Scenario 2

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Scenario 3

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Cincinnati wins – a Buffalo or Cincinnati vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

2 – If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati in Week 18 it will have defeated Cincinnati, a divisional opponent, twice but will not be able to host a playoff game because Cincinnati will have a higher winning percentage for a 16-game schedule than Baltimore will for a 17-game schedule.

If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati and if those two clubs are scheduled to play a Wild Card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the Wild Card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.

The 2022 NFL MVP race gets youthful again

This time last season it seemed that the new generation of NFL Quarterbacks couldn’t challenge Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady for the NFL Regular Season MVP. Eventually, Rodgers would beat out Brady. Aaron Rodgers had a passer rating of 111.9 with 4,115 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions in 16 games in 2021. Brady finished a passer rating of 102.1 with 5316 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 17 games in 2021. While both are still taking snaps in 2022 the NFL MVP race is youthful again without them.

The next closest MVP candidate in 2021 was a record-setting Wide Receiver, Cooper Kupp. Kupp finished with 145 catches for 1947 yards and scored 16 touchdowns in 17 games in 2021. While the Rams did win the Super Bowl, Kupp was awarded his first Offensive Player of the Year award.

In the present day, those names no longer bare weight in an MVP conversation in 2022. Rodgers and Brady both enter Week 16 with a 6-8 record. The Green Bay Packers are playoff hopefuls and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on the ropes of winning their division which is just enough to get in the playoffs as division winners if so. Cooper Kupp only played in 9 games in 2022 before his season was ended by an ankle injury that required surgery. The Los Angles Rams have officially been eliminated from the Playoffs.

A new year and a familiar face

Hello Patrick Mahomes? Out goes Tyreek Hill and in comes JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Taking a leap this season is Mecole Hardman meanwhile Travis Kelce remains Mahomes’ best option. Prior to Week 16, Mahomes has a passer rating of 105.0 with 4,496 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 14 games this season. This is key for Mahomes for two reasons. He leads the NFL in yards and touchdowns thrown. Second, he’s trending in the direction to throw for over 5,000 yards and over 40 touchdowns for the first time since 2018. Kansas City’s defense is currently ranked 24th in defensive DVOA and 21st in EPA allowed per play. Yet, the Chiefs are 11-3 and STILL fighting for the AFC’s first seed.

Fountain of Youth

Jalen Hurts has emerged as arguably the most improved Quarterback and a clear-cut favorite to be the league’s MVP in only his 3rd year at playing the position. Technically, we could say Hurts’ real shot came last season in his sophomore year as he started all 15 games he played in 2021. He has 35 total touchdowns prior to Week 16 (22 passing and 13 rushing touchdowns). His 745 rushing yards are the third-best behind Justin Fields and Lamar Jackson among Quarterbacks. The Eagles are second in points per game at 29.4 per game. His WR1 is A.J. Brown who sits in 5th place in receiving yards this season with 1201. These are clear indicators that it translates to winning because Philadelphia’s 13-1 record says so.

The assumed MVP

Prior to the 2022 season, Josh Allen would be the assumed front-runner MVP, right? He’s one of the few players in the NFL likewise Mahomes and Hurts look like the complete package. Here is a fun stat, Allen’s 3.56 yards-after-contact-per-attempt average is just shy of Josh Jacobs‘ (3.61). Sounds good right? The Bills are sitting at 11-3 and hold a tiebreaker over the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC’s number-one seed. This HAS to put him over Mahomes right? Allen’s case for MVP will be tough to compete against the above-mentioned. He’s top five in passing yards (5th place before Week 16 games) but that gets muddy with Joe Burrow and Kirk Cousins swapping places with him weekly. Mahomes is on pace to drop 5K passing yards and Allen most likely will miss that in 2022. As for the ground game, Hurts has 13 rushing touchdowns while Allen’s 6 before the Week 16 games is beaten. Overall passing touchdowns? Ring that one up for Mahomes again who leads the league with 35 passing touchdowns prior to Week 16. Again, Allen’s case is difficult with Mahomes and Hurts leading in scoring categories.

Can we get one more that’s not a Quarterback?

The last time an NFL MVP was NOT a Quarterback? 2012’s winner was Adrian Peterson. In 2022 it’s hard to say 10 years later another position will take the crown. Cooper Kupp’s effort in 2021 was capped as Offensive Player of the Year. We could argue he was the clear reason the Rams succeeded and even won the Super Bowl. However, Mahomes enters a year where he’s better with arguably less and could end up with the best record in the AFC overall. Hurts has the Eagles winning with the undisputed best record all season long so far.

An honorable mention would be Justin Jefferson who has taken a leap as a player and added the Minnesota Vikings to the contender’s conversation. Does he move the bar as much as Kupp did last season? Unfortunately, Jefferson does not lead the league in receiving touchdowns (only 7 prior to Week 16) and barely leads the league in receptions (111 receptions compared to Tyreek Hill’s 109 prior to Week 16). If Kupp led the league in receptions, receiving touchdowns, and receiving yards but didn’t win MVP neither will Jefferson this season at a lesser achievement.

NFL Sunday Ticket goes to YouTube TV

Back in July, the NFL announced NFL+ as a new way to engage fans in the digital world of streaming. Naturally, we assumed that this would be a hint that the platform was ramping up for something even more. WRONG!

Since 1994, DirecTV has had the pleasure of offering every out-of-market NFL game to consumers. After the 2022 NFL Season, the contract expires and the NFL announced today that it will move the NFL Sunday Ticket platform to YouTube TV starting next season in 2023.

The National Football League today announced a multi-year agreement with Google granting YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels the right to exclusively distribute NFL Sunday Ticket to consumers in the United States starting with the 2023 NFL season. This strategic partnership will provide fans greater access to NFL Sunday Ticket while tapping into the best of YouTube’s technology and product innovation.

NFL.com Announcement

What does this mean for me?

What does this mean for the average consumer? Well if you’re definitely not up to code on technology, you will not be aware that YouTube has its own streaming service available. The advertised price is $64.99 a month which includes 100+ channels. Google boasts that the cable-cutting platform does not require a contract. Cancel when you feel like it! In 2023 YouTube TV will add NFL Sunday Ticket to its many already streaming options.

With over 5 million subscribers and trialers, YouTube TV offers features such as unlimited cloud DVR storage space, the ability to view key sports plays, hide spoilers, and check out real-time stats.

This is a huge leap for the NFL which frees itself from forcing NFL fans to side with one particular cable/satellite company. Instead, you will use the standalone YouTube app that will work with many devices one may own in the present day.

If you’re like us at Baseline Times, we enjoy the NFL Sunday Ticket option of Game Mix. This allows you to add up to four games at once. The hope is that Google will allow YouTube to continue such features. If the ability to add an in-market game to the Game Mix happens this may enhance the product even more.

Today’s announcement does not bring pricing, demo videos, or further proof that the NFL will integrate NFL Sunday Ticket with NFL+. The current NFL+ platform is geared toward a more inexpensive way to watch games on the go that are nationally televised or in your market.

2022 NFL Draft Guide

A lot has happened in the NFL prior to this year’s draft. Davante Adams is a Las Vegas Raider, Russell Wilson swaps Conferences but stays West in Denver, Tyreek Hill is now in Miami, and Tom Brady decided a month of retiring was enough to come back to the NFL.

Nonetheless, a show must go on and that is the 2022 NFL Draft. Here is your quick guide to catching this year’s Draft!

  • 2022 NFL Draft will be hosted from Thursday, April 28, 2022, until Saturday, April 30, 2022
  • The draft will be held in Las Vegas
  • The draft will be broadcast on NFL Network, ABC, ESPN, and ESPN Deportes
    • Thursday, April 28, 8 PM ET
    • Friday, April 29, 7 PM ET
    • Saturday, April 30 Noon ET
  • If you plan to attend in Vegas, Weezer, Ice Cube, and Marshmello will perform FREE concerts
  • NFL.com’s latest Mock Drafts
  • Top 150 Prospects per NFL.com

Tired of QB’s going early? Per Adam Schefter, this is going to be the first time in a few years we are probably going to see anyone BUT a QB picked at number one! No surprise here as the Jacksonville Jaguars follow up with back-to-back drafts with the number one pick. Their prized possession of a QB, Trevor Lawrence helped the Jags to a 3-14 record last season. Thus, they are picking first tonight for other positions.
