What does Starling Marte’s suspension mean for the Pirates?

Well, that was unexpected. The MLB announced yesterday that Starling Marte of the Pittsburgh Pirates would be suspended for 80 games for violation of its PED policy. What does that mean for the Pirates?

First, it means they just got a whole heckuva lot worse. Marte has been consistently worth about 5 wins a season. It also means that Andrew McCutcheon probably just got a lot worse, too, as he’ll be shifting back to CF where he was, by all accounts, an atrocious defender last season. Lastly, it means there’s going to be a cry from the fans to call up top outfield prospect Austin Meadows, but it doesn’t look like that’ll happen either.

All in all…not a great day to be a fan of the Buccos.
